Replacing Storage Heaters

Bought this house last year and it has 7 of those shitcunt storage heaters in it, they are expensive, look shit and may even have asbestos in them!

What are cheap, good looking and modern heaters I should be going for?

Ah understood. Its not the most efficient use of air source tbh, but it should work. The maintenance costs may be high to start with until becomes universally adopted.

The upgrading of pumps is bollocks, there is no difference they can make, I'd expect they have added some form of electric heater batteries somewhere which could cost.

We've had the radiators changed. The pumps are rated to work efficiently down to -7 or something like that. Efficiency coefficient is approx 3.4.
I'm not concerned about their ability to heat the house. My only worry is how much that will cost me over winter. At the moment we're operating well below the predicted cost on our previous gas system. That may be largely due to the solar PV system we have too. That will be useless over winter so we may be well over prediction come Xmas.

Depends where you live, in Jersey for instance, most winters they will cope.

The newer air source units are definitely better but are close to reaching diminishing returns. When the temperature drops below 0 deg C, they will struggle to heat water up to the required temps (60-65 deg for HWS and 75-80 for LTHW), so you need much bigger radiators (unless you have underfloor heating) and slightly larger heating pipes and still the system will not be able to recover a cold house quickly.

Our home is not suitable for the air to air ac system so that was not am option.

I'm not en expert on these things by any means but heat pumps seemed the only economical alternative to gas boiler that would work in our house. They seem to be doing the job at the moment.
The real proof will be winter.

Interesting. Using air source to heat water is not ideal. Using the air source to heat air is more efficient in our climate.

The best solution is hybrid, but Justin has no gas. So I'd go for a conventional air source AC system that provides heating and cooling by conventional blown air method.

I'd probably complement this with either an oil tank for the hybrid fuel part for heating and also to provide heating for hot water, although solar can help with HWS, it can't deliver year round HWS

The other thing to look out for if you don't have the money upfront is to put it on the mortgate like we did. Our bank has a green deal extra borrowring where the interest rate is only 0.99% Currently the saving + RHI grant pays for the extra borrowing.

I've just had two air source heat pumps installed so if you consider that route I'm happy to pass on my experience. Just send me a whomail.
Noise is not a factor at all for mine.
As for the cost and effectiveness I can't say much as I've only had them a short while and won't know the full situation until I've gone through a winter with them.
At the moment I'm spending signigicantly less per month than with the previous gas boiler but the pumps are only doing hot water not heating at the moment.
They are not cheap to install, that I can say, but you will get a 5k grant up front to soften the blow.

Air source as suggested. Make sure it supplies hot water for showers and maybe a bath if you want one.

Check out the noise levels in decibels...some are horrendously noisy and check out grants

You can get an electric boiler and run a standard wet system from it. I'd probably consider an air source heat exchange AC system if the house layout suits it.

Look at Dimplex Quantum, these will utilise Economy 7 tariff and may actually save on running costs.

Look at the insulation your house has too.
